The Tamale Teaching Hospital, situated in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana, is the third largest hospital in the country and serves as a key referral center for the five northern regions: Northern, Savannah, North East, Upper East, and Upper West. Positioned 2 kilometers southeast of the city center, it collaborates with the University for Development Studies to provide undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine, nursing, and nutrition. Established in 1974 as the Tamale Regional Hospital, it was upgraded to a teaching hospital in 2005, making it the third such institution in Ghana after Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The hospital’s mandate, defined by Act 525 of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act of 1996, encompasses the delivery of advanced clinical health services, support for medical education, and health research aimed at improving healthcare. Its vision is to become a leading center for high-quality postsecondary healthcare, research, and education, while its mission focuses on providing affordable and excellent professional healthcare through well-trained and dedicated professionals.
Core values of the hospital include human-centeredness, professionalism, expertise in innovation, integrity, and teamwork. The hospital offers a wide range of services through various departments, including Accident and Emergency, Anesthesia, Dental and Oral Health, Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), Internal Medicine, Laboratory Services, Maternity, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Radiology, Surgery, and Urology.
Significant infrastructural developments include a donation of 335,000 Ghana cedis from MTN Ghana in 2012 for constructing a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Completed in July 2015, this facility serves up to forty neonates and their mothers and includes office and student learning spaces. The hospital also benefits from a dedicated power cable from Akosombo, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.
