37 Millitary Hospital

The 37 Military Hospital, located in Accra, Ghana, between Kotoka International Airport and central Accra, is one of the largest military hospitals in the country, second only to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Its name originates from its position as the 37th military hospital constructed in the British West African colonies. The hospital is notable for its historical significance and a local legend about bats that never left their leader.

Founded on July 4, 1941, by British military officer General George Giffard, the hospital was initially established to treat soldiers injured during World War II. It was initially called No. 37 General Hospital and later renamed 37 Military Hospital of the Gold Coast in 1956. Although originally built to serve military personnel, the hospital was expanded and opened to the public while still being primarily staffed by military personnel. During a national strike by doctors in 2011, the Ministry of Health provided GH¢230,000 worth of medical supplies to help the hospital manage the increased patient load, which doubled during the strike.

The hospital also played a crucial role during the 2015 Accra explosion and floods, when it was overwhelmed with bodies, highlighting its importance in emergency response.

With around 500 beds, the hospital is equipped with a 24-hour accident and emergency department, pharmacy, and x-ray services. It also has specialized departments for dental care, gynecology, pediatrics, and even veterinary services. Its trauma department is highly regarded, and the hospital serves as a teaching institution for postgraduate medical students.

The hospital’s development has been significantly supported by the German company Hospital Engineering GmbH since 1991, which has been involved in various projects, including the creation of the Medical Oxygen Production and Distribution system, an operating theatre block, a burns unit, an intensive care unit, and several other critical facilities.

The hospital houses a wide range of departments, including divisions for public health, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, pathology, surgery, and more. It also has a health training school and specialized units like a renal dialysis unit and an ear, nose, and throat division.
