The late former president, John Evans Atta Mills

John Evans Atta Mills was born on July 21, 1944, in Tarkwa, Western Region, Ghana. He attended Achimota School for his secondary education and later studied law at the University of Ghana, where he received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree.

Before entering politics, Atta Mills had a distinguished academic career. He served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana and later became a visiting professor at several universities, including Stanford Law School in the United States. Atta Mills entered politics in the 1980s and was appointed as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana

He served in various government positions, including as Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning under President Jerry Rawlings’ administration.

Atta Mills ran for president twice unsuccessfully before winning the presidency in the 2008 elections as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Atta Mills was inaugurated as the President of Ghana on January 7, 2009, succeeding President John Agyekum Kufuor.

During his presidency, Atta Mills focused on promoting social justice, good governance, and economic development. He pursued policies aimed at reducing poverty and improving access to healthcare and education. Challenges, including power outages and economic difficulties, confronted his administration, but people widely regarded Atta Mills as a humble and honest leader committed to democratic principles.

On July 24, 2012, John Evans Atta Mills passed away suddenly at the age of 68. His death occurred just months before he was due to seek re-election for a second term.

Reports attributed the cause of his death to a cardiac arrest, although speculation and controversy have surrounded the circumstances of his passing.
