Nestled within a lush, ancient crater about 30 km (19 mi) southeast of Kumasi, Lake Bosumtwi stands as Ghana’s only natural lake and a true marvel of nature. An Ancient Impact with Cosmic Roots
Lake Bosumtwi’s origins are as captivating as its tranquil waters. Over 1.07 million years ago, an asteroid from the main asteroid belt slammed into Earth, leaving behind a colossal impact crater. This crater, now partially eroded and concealed by dense rainforest, was filled by rainfall over time, giving birth to the lake as we know it today.
The crater’s original depth reaches an astounding 750 meters (2,460 feet) if you include the lake’s sediments, although the exposed depth is about 380 meters (1,250 feet). While studying the crater is challenging due to overgrown vegetation and lake waters, recent scientific drilling beneath the lake’s floor has revealed shocked materials—solid evidence of the asteroid’s impact. Fragments known as tektites, believed to be from this very impact, have even been found in neighboring Ivory Coast and deep-sea sediments along the African coast.
A Journey Through Time and Climate
Long before the asteroid hit, the area surrounding Lake Bosumtwi was a thriving rainforest, filled with wildlife. After the impact, the crater slowly filled with water, but the lake’s size fluctuated dramatically over the centuries. Fossilized fish found on hilltops tell tales of times when the lake swelled far beyond its current boundaries. In contrast, during drier periods, the water receded so much that the surrounding forest began to reclaim the crater, shrinking the lake into little more than a pond. One such dry spell, supported by paleoclimate data and local legend, lasted until just 300 years ago.
