The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (GARH), located in North Ridge within the Osu-Klottey Sub-Metro of Accra, serves the entire Greater Accra Region, which has an estimated population of over 4.67 million as of 2016. The hospital’s immediate service area includes key suburbs such as Ridge, Nima, Maamobi, Kanda, Accra New Town, and several others. Established around 1928 as a facility for European expatriates, GARH transitioned into a District Hospital following Ghana’s independence in 1957, and was later designated as Ridge Regional Hospital in 1997. Over the years, it has evolved into a modern hospital with a 420-bed capacity, offering comprehensive specialist services in line with the growing demands of Accra’s population.
Before its recent redevelopment, GARH faced significant challenges due to aging infrastructure and outdated equipment, most of which dated back to 1911-1923. The hospital’s facilities were inadequate, with only 192 beds available for approximately 250 daily in-patients, leading to overcrowding and the use of corridors and open spaces for emergency care. Additionally, the hospital was seeing over 800 outpatients daily, further straining its resources. The disjointed placement of buildings, varying in quality and design, hindered the efficient flow of patient care, reflecting the hospital’s struggles to meet the increasing healthcare demands.
Recognizing these challenges, the Government of Ghana undertook a major initiative to replace the outdated Ridge Regional Hospital with new, state-of-the-art facilities, aiming to better serve the needs of the rapidly expanding capital city. This effort aligns with the government’s broader commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure across the country, ultimately contributing to the goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage.
