The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) was conceived as part of a long-standing vision, dating back to the establishment of the University of Ghana Medical School in 1964, to create a ‘Medical Village’ on the Legon campus. This vision aimed to train various health professionals for Ghana. Over time, this vision led to the development of several health-related institutions, including the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research and various schools under the College of Health Sciences.
The project to establish UGMC gained momentum with a loan from the Government of Ghana, facilitated by a loan from Israel. The Ministries of Education, Finance, and Health were involved in its establishment, and the construction began in 2013 under President John Evans Atta Mills. Phase I of UGMC was completed and inaugurated in 2017, with Sheba Medical Centre in Israel serving as the medical planning consultant.
