Northern region’s wasawasa

Wasawasa is a traditional Ghanaian dish commonly found in the Northern Region, particularly among the Dagomba people. It is a spicy meal made from yam peels that are dried and later milled into yam powder.

The meal is prepared by washing the yam powder with clean water to remove any dirt and then allowing it to get steamed with heat on fire to give it a grainy-look like that of rice. It is then steamed again with spices like ginger, pepper and the likes to give it a unique taste.

Wasawasa has a myth following its preparation and one of the myth is not to “fart” during the preparation of the meal. It is also said that one is not allowed to help in the preparation during her monthly flow. As to whether these myths are true or false, it forever remains a myth.

Wasawasa is served just like waakye with salad toppings, stew or shito with any protein of your choice. It is a nice delicacy as well as a healthy one since it follows strict hygienic conditions during its preparation.
