Personal Life

Former President John Agyekum Kufour was born on December 8, 1938, in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana. He received his primary education at the Roman Catholic Boys’ School in Kumasi and later attended Prempeh College for his secondary education. Kufuor proceeded to study law at Lincoln’s Inn in London, United Kingdom, and the bar called him in 1961.

Kufuor’s political career began in the 1960s when he joined the United Party (UP), which later merged with other parties to form the National Alliance of Liberals (NAL).

In 1969, authorities appointed him as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and he later served as Minister of State in the administrations of Prime Ministers Kofi Abrefa Busia and Edward Akufo-Addo.

Kufuor also held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Attorney General, during the 1970s and 1980s.

In 1992, voters elected him to parliament as the Member of Parliament for Atwima-Nwabiagya in the Ashanti Region. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) elected him as President of Ghana in December 2000.

He was inaugurated as president on January 7, 2001, succeeding President Jerry Rawlings, and served two terms in office until January 7, 2009. During his presidency, Kufuor focused on economic reform and development, implementing policies to promote privatization, attract foreign investment, and reduce poverty.

Under his leadership, Ghana experienced significant economic growth, with improvements in GDP growth, inflation rates, and foreign direct investment. Kufuor also prioritized education and healthcare, launching initiatives such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to improve access to healthcare services.

After leaving office, Kufuor remained active in public life and international diplomacy. He served as a Global Ambassador for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the UN Secretary-General appointed him as a Senior Advisor on Climate Change.
