The Ministry of Defence in Ghana is tasked with ensuring national security and safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. Its primary functions include:

  1. Defense Policy Formulation: Developing and implementing defense policies and strategies to protect Ghana’s interests, deter external aggression, and maintain peace and stability within the country and the region.
  2. Armed Forces Management: Overseeing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), which comprise the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and coordinating their activities to effectively defend the nation and support national development efforts.
  3. Defense Budgeting and Resource Allocation: Allocating resources, including budgetary allocations and procurement decisions, to support the operational readiness and modernization of the armed forces and ensure their capability to respond to security threats.
  4. National Security Coordination: Collaborating with other government agencies, law enforcement agencies, and intelligence services to coordinate national security efforts, share information, and address emerging security challenges.
  5. Border Security: Protecting Ghana’s borders to prevent illegal immigration, transnational crime, smuggling, and other security threats, in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service and other relevant agencies.
  6. Peacekeeping Operations: Participating in international peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the United Nations and regional organizations to promote peace and stability in conflict-affected areas and contribute to global peace and security.
  7. Disaster Response and Humanitarian Assistance: Providing support for disaster response and relief efforts, including search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance, and disaster preparedness, in coordination with civil authorities and international partners.
  8. Defense Diplomacy: Engaging in defense diplomacy and military cooperation with other countries to foster mutual understanding, build military-to-military relationships, and enhance Ghana’s defense capabilities through training, joint exercises, and defense partnerships.

The Ministry of Defence plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and well-being of the Ghanaian people, protecting national interests, and contributing to regional and international peace and security efforts.
