Ministry of Energy

The Ministry of Energy in Ghana is responsible for formulating and implementing policies and programs related to the exploration, production, distribution, and efficient use of energy resources within the country. Some of its key functions include:

  1. Energy Policy Formulation: Developing comprehensive energy policies and strategies to ensure sustainable and reliable energy supply, promote energy efficiency and conservation, and support the growth of the energy sector in Ghana.
  2. Electricity Generation and Distribution: Overseeing the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity in Ghana, including the regulation of the activities of the state-owned electricity company (e.g., Ghana Grid Company Limited) and private sector entities involved in power generation and distribution.
  3. Renewable Energy Development: Promoting the development and utilization of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass to diversify Ghana’s energy mix, enhance energy security, and mitigate the environmental impact of energy production.
  4. Petroleum Exploration and Production: Regulating and promoting the exploration, development, and production of petroleum resources, including crude oil and natural gas, through licensing, oversight of exploration and production activities, and collaboration with stakeholders in the petroleum industry.
  5. Energy Access and Affordability: Implementing initiatives to improve access to modern energy services, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and addressing energy poverty through programs such as rural electrification projects, off-grid renewable energy solutions, and subsidies for low-income households.
  6. Energy Infrastructure Development: Planning and facilitating the development of energy infrastructure, including power plants, transmission and distribution networks, fuel storage facilities, and transportation infrastructure, to meet the growing energy demand and enhance energy reliability and resilience.
  7. Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Promoting energy efficiency measures and conservation practices across various sectors, including industry, transportation, buildings, and appliances, to reduce energy consumption, lower energy costs, and minimize environmental impact.

The Ministry of Energy plays a critical role in driving the sustainable development of Ghana’s energy sector, ensuring adequate and affordable energy supply to support economic growth, social development, and environmental sustainability.
