Ejisu Besease Shrine is one of the Ejisu Traditional Shrines with historical background. The Ejisu Besease Shrine is one of the 13 remaining Asante traditional buildings and one of the 10 remaining shrine houses. The Ejisu Besease Shrine was built around 1850 and was consulted by the late Ashanti queen and warrior, Yaa Asantewaa, in the last war with the British.
The shrine is made up of four buildings that surround a central courtyard, with three open rooms and one enclosed room. The open rooms are for the drummers, singers and cooking area. The enclosed room is the actual shrine, which has walls that allow for ventilation and lighting. The shrine house is on the world heritage list as rare surviving examples of a significant traditional architectural design.
The buildings were constructed in the wattle and daub form, which is a timber frame structure made of vertical timber posts linked together by horizontal members and then plastered with clay on both sides. The Ejisu Besease Shrine has steep pitched roofs that are 60 degrees or more, which allows for very good efficiency and durability of the thatch roof. The front basement of the raised floors is covered with carvings of various forms and symbols. Tourist visits here to learn and experience incredible adventure.
