Dagaare, also known as Dagaari or Dagara, is a Gur language spoken primarily in the Upper West Region of Ghana, as well as in parts of Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. It belongs to the Niger-Congo language family and is specifically classified as a member of the Gur.
Dagaare is spoken by approximately 1 million people, with the majority residing in Ghana. It is the native language of the Dagaaba people, who are primarily subsistence farmers and also engage in small-scale trading and crafts

The Dagaare language is known for its complex grammar and rich vocabulary. Like other Gur languages, it is a tonal language, meaning that the pitch or tone of a word can change its meaning. Dagaare has two primary tones: high and low. These tonal distinctions are important for conveying different words and grammatical nuances.
Efforts are being made to promote and preserve Dagaare through language revitalization programs, education initiatives, and cultural activities. These efforts aim to strengthen the use of Dagaare within the community and ensure its survival for future generations.
